Will The Revival of The Khilafah Protect Muslims? Dr. Ovamir Anjum

For over a century, the Muslim world has been divided into nation states, borders, and political systems that often leave Muslims weak, divided, and unable to protect each other. From Palestine and Al Aqsa to conflicts across the Muslim world, many are asking a difficult question about unity, leadership, and the future of the Ummah.

In this episode of our Expert Question Series, we sit down with Dr. Ovamir Anjum, Professor and Endowed Chair of Islamic Studies in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Toledo. He is the co-editor of the American Journal of Islam and Society and recently appointed editor-in-chief for the review board at the Yaqeen Institute. His areas of research include Islamic history, theology, political thought, and Islamic intellectual history.

Dr. Anjum is the author of Politics, Law, and Community in Islamic Thought: The Taymiyyan Moment (Cambridge University Press, 2012) and Ranks of Divine Seekers: Translation of Ibn al-Qayyimโ€™s Madarij al-Salikin (Brill, 2020), the first two of four volumes.

In this conversation, we explore the concept of Khilafah, Muslim unity, nation states, Islamic governance, economics, sanctions, and the role Muslims in the West play in the future of the Ummah. This is a deep discussion about the past, present, and future of the Muslim world and whether unity is the key to solving many of the problems Muslims face today.

  1. I thought he would be touching on the subject of money when he spoke of Islamic Economics & sanctions but sadly he did not.
A state cannot be independent & fully sovereign unless & otherwise it frees itself from modern fractional reserve banking system & the bogus paper money. Money, in the Qur'an & Hadith is Gold & Silver. Unless we return to that in some form, those who control the banking system would always dictate the terms & sanctions.

  2. Those who cannot live peacefully in one street, want to force everyone to live under one man's rule. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
No where in the Qur'an or Hadees is Khilafah part of religion or being a Muslim.
Only people who are cut off from reality or fail to achieve something significant in their lives, talk about Khilafah.

When you had Khilafah, the Khilafah of the sahabah… Weren't they killed by Muslims themselves?
Didn't that lead to civil wars and deaths of millions??? Strange isn't it.

And Muslims lie when they say the west ended Khilafah. Ottomans were a monarchy. When the last corrupt monarch realized that he cannot hold on to power anymore, he declared himself a Khalifa to gain sympathy of uneducated religious Muslims (which were a majority at that time and even today)… Ottoman empire was never a Khilafahp

I wish Muslims educated themselves and worked hard and did honest businesses instead of wasting time.

Ok, lets say Khilafah comes. Good. Who will be the khalifa? MBS? ๐Ÿ˜‚ Or khumeni?
Khilafah is more beneficial for the West. Because today, they have to buy so many Muslim leaders.
With Khilafah, they'll just have to buy one. Easy management.

Majoriy of you won't even read the full comment here. That is the level of patience you have. And you want a Khilafah?

  4. mmmm, this brother mixes a lot of things. Firstly, we can not change shariah law because today there is no shariah state and we are living in nation states. Shariah law will remain the truth and only acceptable law , same as Qur'an the only wholy book even if there are no any Muslims on this planet. Truth cannnot be changed because "well tday, we are livng blablabla..". Secondly, he is theorizing a lo without proving any evidence from our sources. Third, he does not understand what "sovereignty" means. With all my respect, he sounds like an orientalist; someone he learned about Islam from non muslims, ill educated people. Can he speak Arabic? How about debate on this topic, would he accept it?

  5. Muslims live in so many countries. Yet not one Muslim group organised a boat of their own to take to Gaza. If Muslim associations in all different countries (who always collect donations) had organised one boat each from each from the many association in the many cities, there is no way Israel would have been able to stop all those boats. But not one Muslim association sent even one boat full of Muslims. It was the non Muslims who organised the boats the tried to go to Gaza for help. Eventually a few Muslims joined those boats. But very few.

  6. How are you going to get the different Kingdoms of the Arab countries to agree to it? They all are too busy saving their own families rulings. Will they follow a Khilafa?

  7. Khalifa can not stop different countries doing what they are doing to Muslims. It's the Muslims from around the world united can do something. But Musims put each other's down. There is no unity.

  8. So he distinguishes between an โ€œIslamic countryโ€ and a โ€œsovereign country,โ€ arguing that Afghanistan qualifies as Islamic because it established an Islamic system after the U.S. invasion, yet is not sovereign due to its dependence on external actors and frozen assets. However, this reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of sovereignty. In political theory, sovereignty refers to the supreme authority within a territory and the capacity to act independently in both domestic and international affairs. Dependence or economic constraints do not automatically negate sovereignty; many internationally recognized states operate under similar pressures.
From an Islamic perspective, sovereignty is also conceptualized differently. It is often understood as rooted in divine law (sharia) and the broader umma, rather than purely in territorial autonomy. In this sense, Afghanistanโ€™s internal organization around Islamic law could itself be interpreted as an expression of sovereignty, not its absence.
Therefore, the claim that Afghanistan is not sovereign requires stronger empirical evidence. If there are concrete examples of Afghan policies that contradict Islamic principles or demonstrate total external control, they should be presented. Otherwise, the argument remains unsubstantiated.
Moreover, if sovereignty is to be questioned on the basis of external influence, then similar scrutiny should apply to other statesโ€”such as Pakistan, Turkey, or various Arab countries-which often align their policies with major powers like the United States or Israel. Selectively applying this critique undermines its analytical consistency.

  9. The colonisers known instantively the weakest, most vulnerable corruptible elites who has already fallen into the Honey/Epstein/Rothschilds Zionism leagues and made this individual sit on the false throne and be their TERRORIST EYES and start the ANTI MUSLIM propaganda. True Muslim leader is vitally important but not one that will want his HANDS/RINGS kissed and Dismisses equality of man and woman. This will be extremely difficult to find, as for decades men in Islam has accepted Islam and but brought their customs to run parallel to their acceptance, the racism within the Muslim Ummah must ceased, the only TEACHINGS is that of our beloved Prophet Muhammad PbuH, thatโ€™s what the HOLY QURAN said, obeyed me Allah SWT and Worship me and my Messenger Prophet Muhammad PbuH. Ameen Allahu Akbar

  10. There are 2 type of Islam Gov today those who abandon it completely and practice authoritian and extremist like Taliban that are brutal and oppressive – neither qualify and I can't point to any Muslim country that can be called Islamic gov cuz they lack the most basic aspect Islam – justice instead it runs on corruption oppression and stealing from the weak

  11. Well, the Khilafah will never be anything else than an utopia fantasy for observing muslims of one majority. In this case Sunni. Out of this majority, only parts of it will support the totalitarian idea of Khilafah, the rest will not. The dreamy presentation of this divisive idea is just a presentation, good luck uniting all muslims.

Furthermore, throwing in the clause of absolute obediance to Sharia, and just noting "even though everything isn't perfect", makes you just seem like another radical wishing for what no normal society appreciates in the long term.

  12. Allahuma barik good interview but sometimes itโ€™s editing is cut with some words..
Also sometimes when he say hhhhm cut those and to avoid jump cut maybe have some closeup shot of hands or change the camera to the other side. If you got third camera have them move around so that you can use it as footage to cover up jumps.. or just add more golden age images we wonโ€™t mind and it wonโ€™t be out of place.

  13. Shaddad ibn Aws narrates that the Prophet ๏ทบ said;
"Theย most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah is to say the following dua.

If somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it,
and dies on the same day before the evening,
    he will be from the people of Paradise;
And if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it,
    and dies before the morning,
he will be from the people of Paradise.โ€

O Allah! You are my Lord! None has the right to be worshipped but You.
You created me and I am Your slave,
And I am faithful to my covenant and my promise as much as I can.
I seek refuge with You from all the evil I have done.
I acknowledge before You all the blessings You have bestowed upon me,
And I confess to You all my sins.
So I entreat You to forgive my sins,
for nobody can forgive sins except You.

  14. I'm an African Muslim observing the end of Muslims and Islam. As i see it…business-as-usual Islam is unsustainable for the trajectory of humanity and SHALL, most naturally and organically, be rooted out…by Allah, God. Give a generation or less, the Muslims will abandon their mosques and open their scriptures in disbelief that people actually believed this once upon a time.

Business-as-usual Islam = religion of peace lies; no introspection; no responsibility; they're not Muslim or of Islam gaslighting; you're Islamophobic; no compulsion in Islam myth; sanctity of life lie; Islam is the one true faith; build the khilafat; Islam will triumph over the West; death to Israel, death to Hindutva etc etc.

Do you really think you can cause mischief, libel, division, hate, mayhem and terror on this earth and not be judged? Did Hamas really think they could unleash a pogrom on the Children of Israel, and not be judged? Does anyone really imagine that Israel could bomb Gaza killing tens of thousands of people, without the permission of Allah?

I marvel and stare when i go into mosques… the museums of the future.
