I Spent a Day in Australia’s Hidden Outback Mosque

In this documentary, OnePath Network journeys deep into the Australian outback to uncover a little-known chapter of Australia’s Islamic history.

Our journey takes us to Broken Hill, home to one of the oldest surviving mosques in regional Australia, built by Muslim cameleers in the late 1800s.

Practising Islam far from home, they crossed the outback carrying supplies that helped connect some of Australia’s most remote regions. Living and working on Indigenous land, they established mosques and communities that quietly became part of Australia’s foundation.

The mosque stands as proof that Muslims were not visitors here — they became part of the land’s story.

  1. The camels aren't long gone. They were released and now Australia has one of the largest wild Camel populations in the world, with about 1m feral camels running around the outback. We should eat them.

  2. It's just unimaginable courage that these people had and one day decided to move out of their homes in landlocked region with hundreds of Bactrian camels across seas to an alien continent on the other side of the world and settle there😬🤯From being nomads in one world to becoming builders for a new country. Ironically these camels native to Afghanistan are fewer in number now than Australia.

  3. My ancestors were cameleers and I have been to Australia and met with Native people and I adore their culture, their songs, languages. Love to all Australians, had made really good friends there.

  4. Just heard about this a few weeks ago in a talk.
Is it true they built masjids right across the train tracks?
What about the progeny of these cameleers? Could you please research into them as to their condition today? As what I heard in the talk was far from positive about their current plight today

  5. The Prophet ﷺ said: "If you ask Allah for Paradise, then ask Him for Al-Firdaws for it is the highest part of Paradise, in the middle of Paradise, and from it spring the rivers of Paradise, and above it is the Throne of the Most Merciful." [Bukhari and Muslim]

Whoever recites Qul huwa Allahu ahad (Surah al-Ikhlas) ten times, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise. (Sahih al-Jami' al-Saghir, 6472).

  6. Asslamalikum don’t be surprise you can find Pakistanis forget the moon in Jupiter. one more thing somehow I think everything about Australia is very annoying. Except these beautiful Masajids houses of Allah SWT.
