It’s a reward from Allah for those who lead a life of faith, kindness, and good deeds. It is filled with hope and beauty, encouraging us Muslims to hold onto our faith and look beyond earthly life.

As Muslims, we use the phrase “In Jannah (Paradise), Inshaa’Aallah (God willing)” a lot.  Whether someone dies and we wish them to be in a perfect place or when we want to have something that seems impossible, so we keep telling ourselves that we will have it in Jannah! This symbolizes what Jannah is to all Muslims—a place where we will have whatever we desire.

But what exactly is Jannah, what does it look like, and why does it hold such a special place in a Muslim’s heart? Today we answer all these questions. We’ll explore Islam and Jannah in detail, understanding what Jannah in Islam truly means and its description in the Quran.

When people ask, “What is heaven called in Islam?” The answer is Jannah. In Arabic, Jannah (جنة) ’ comes from a word meaning hidden or concealed. Why? Because Jannah is a place that is hidden from sight. It translates to “garden” or “paradise.”

Paradise in Islam is a place where beauty and happiness are beyond anything imaginable. But Jannah isn’t only about material pleasures—it’s about the peace and closeness to Allah—our creator—that every soul yearns for.

For Muslims, striving to reach Jannah is a powerful motivation. It assures believers that this life is not the end but a journey leading to an everlasting afterlife filled with peace and joy. In Jannah, believers will finally be at peace, rewarded for their faith and patience.

Did you know that paradise in Islam has various levels and even names? Let’s explore them together.

Names and Levels of Heaven in Islam

The word Jannah (Paradise) shows up in the Quran 147 times in different names, representing different levels in Jannah. You see, in Islam, Jannah is not a single paradise but has levels, each with its own unique beauty and blessings.

“Jannah has a hundred levels, and there is as much space between each level as there is between the ground and the sky.” Bukhari

Some scholars say that the hundred levels of paradise in Islam mean that there are grades in each level of Jannah. Some other scholars said that the phrase “hundred levels” means “plurality,” which means that Jannah is not just one level; it has a hundred levels, and each one is farther away than the one before it.

But are they 100 or 7? Here’s what the Quran says:

So He ordained them seven heavens in two periods and revealed in every heaven its affair, and We adorned the lower heaven with brilliant stars and (made it) to guard; that is the decree of the Mighty, the Knowing. (Quran 41:12)

On the Miraculous Night Journey (Israa and Miraag), the Prophet PBUH entered each heaven, so they are indeed seven in number. Allah puts Muslims at each level based on their deeds in life.

“They will each be assigned ranks according to their deeds. And your Lord is not unaware of what they do.” (Quran 6:132).

However, scholars don’t really agree upon their names. We will go through various names of heaven and what each of them means.

Jannat Al Adan (Garden of Everlasting Residence)

The first level of Jannah is Jannat Al Adan. The meaning of Adan is “residence,” “eternity,” or “home.”

So Jannat Al-Adn is the Garden of Everlasting Residence. This level of paradise in Islam is a place of eternal stay, promised to the righteous who remain faithful and obedient to Allah. It symbolizes stability and enduring blessings.

“Allah has promised to the believing men and believing women Gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and pleasant dwellings in Gardens of perpetual residence” (Quran 9:72)

Jannat al-Firdaus (The Gardens of Highest Paradise)

Firdaus paradise in Islam is the highest and most honored level of paradise, where those closest to Allah will be.

“Jannah has a hundred levels, and it takes a hundred years to get from one level to the next. The highest level is Jannat al Firdaws, from which four rivers flow. The throne is on top of it. So, when you pray to Allah SWT, ask for Jannat al Firdaws.” Thirmidhi

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraged us to ask for Firdaus when we ask for paradise. Why? Firdaus is the closest heaven to Allah’s throne; it is the best of all heavens.

Imagine being this close to Allah SWT—what an honor every Muslim shall seek. Its beauty and blessings are are unparalleled, making it the most cherished level.

“Those who inherit Firdaus. They will abide therein forever” (Quran 23:11).

“Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds—they will have the Gardens of Firdaws as a lodging” (Quran 18:107).

Jannat al-Na’im (The Garden of Bliss)

Na’im means a life filled with wealth, happiness, and blessings. It also means living in peace. It is referred to as a paradise of delight and pleasure.

As it is a realm of pure delight and comfort, intended for the faithful who have lived a life of gratitude and devotion. It is filled with spiritual and physical pleasures, offering peace and joy to its inhabitants.

“Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds, they will have gardens of pleasure” (Quran 31:8).

Jannat al-Ma’wa (The Garden of Refuge)

Jannat Al-Mawa is mentioned twice in the Quran. So what does Ma’wa mean? Ma’wa in Arabic means “refuge.” This symbolizes how paradise in Islam is considered a safe and eternal shelter for the pious.

People also call this level the adobe for the martyrs and the Mumins.

“Near it is the Garden of Refuge” (Quran 53:15).

Dar al-Salam (The Abode of Peace)

Dar Al-Salam is mentioned twice in the Quran. This is described as a home of eternal peace and safety, where the trials of the worldly life are replaced with serenity and divine contentment.

The term “Salam” indicates an abode where Allah’s peace is guaranteed.

“For them will be the Home of Peace with their Lord. And He will be their protecting friend because of what they used to do” (Quran 6:127).

Dar al-Akhirah (The Eternal Home)

This title emphasizes the everlasting nature of paradise. To be in paradise means it is forever. This contrasts it with the temporary nature of earthly life, where we are being tested.

Dar-Al Akhirah is a place that never fades, where the rewards are eternal

“And indeed, the hereafter is the true home of life” (Quran 29:64).

Jannat al-Khuld (The Eternal Garden)

Khuld means “eternity” or “everlasting,” to be immoral, to be eternal, or to last forever. signifying that the pleasures of Jannah are permanent, without end.

It is a garden where believers will reside forever, a place of boundless reward and peace.

“Say, is that better or the “Garden of Immorality” (Dar ul Khuld) that is promised to those who stay away from evil? It will be their payoff and the end of their journey.” (Quran 25:15).

Illiyyun (The Highest Place)

Illiyyun refers to a record of the deeds of the righteous but is also interpreted as a place of the highest ranks in Jannah. It is mentioned as a realm where the rewards for the most righteous and virtuous are stored.

The angels of Hafaza hang out in a place called Illiyyun. Hafaza means protection, and it is the place where the good deeds of the righteous go up.

“Indeed, the record of the righteous is in ‘Illiyyun. And what can make you know what is ‘Illiyyun? It is a register inscribed” (Quran 83:18-20).

Dar ul Maqaam (The Garden of Eternal Settlement)

Maqaan means “settling place,” “an essence place to stay,” or “the safe place to live.” This emphasizes that it is a final, unchangeable abode.

The Zikr of Dar ul Maqam came in the Surah al Fatir:

“Who has settled us in the home of duration out of His bounty. There touches us not in it any fatigue, and there touches us not in it weariness [of mind].” (Quran 35:35).

Jannat al-Qarār (The Garden of Final Abode)

While not frequently used, Qarār means a place of permanence or settlement, suggesting a stable and eternal home where all desires are fulfilled.

Dar al-Muttaqeen (The Abode of the Righteous)

Al-muttaqeen are those who are conscious of Allah in every part of their lives, leading a life of piety and goodness, and those who deserve paradise.

That’s why paradise is often called Dar al-Muttaqeen because it will be their home, Inshaa’Allah.

“And Paradise will be brought near [that day] to the righteous (God-conscious individuals who guard themselves against evil).” (Quran 26:90)

You see, paradise in Islam has many names. but they all have something in common. It’s the final resting place where we will be happy forever! Now that we know all about the various names of paradise, let’s see how it is described in the Quran.

The Quran on Heaven and its Description

There’s no doubt we all wonder what heaven looks like. I mean, it is the place we will stay in forever!

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described Jannah as containing:

“What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what the human heart has never imagined” (Muslim).

This tells us that the pleasures of paradise are so extraordinary that our human minds and hearts can’t even comprehend its beauty until we enter it, Inshaa’Allah.

But we also needn’t speculate. Glimpses of Jannah are described in the Quran on many occasions. Here are some Islamic heaven descriptions in the Quran.

Flowing Rivers

Allah describes Jannah as a place “wherein rivers flow”. There will be rivers of pure water, milk that never goes sour, rivers of pure honey, and rivers of wine that do not intoxicate

“The description of the paradise promised to the righteous is that in it are rivers of fresh water, rivers of milk that never change in taste, rivers of wine delicious to drink, and rivers of pure honey. There they will also have all kinds of fruit and forgiveness from their Lord. Can they be like those who will stay in the Fire forever, left to drink boiling water that will tear apart their insides? “ (Quran 47:15).

Beautiful Gardens with Shaded Trees

Jannah is full of beautiful gardens shaded with abundant trees and fruits. Believers are also promised “gardens of perpetual residence” (Quran 13:35), with shade and fruits beyond imagining, symbols of comfort and abundance

“There they will have fruits and whatever they desire.” (Quran 36:57).

Anything You Wish For

In heaven there will be all the food and drinks that one shall wish for. Not only food but anything your heart desires, you will find it in Jannah, Inshaa’allah.

We are your supporters in this worldly life and in the hereafter. There you will have whatever your souls desire, and there you will have whatever you ask for (Quran 41:31).

“And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith—We will join with them their descendants, and We will not deprive them of anything of their deeds. Every person, for what he earned, is retained.” (Quran 52: 21)

“They will be told,˺ “Eat and drink joyfully for what you did in the days gone by.” (Quran 69:24)

Cloths of luxurious silk

The clothes of Jannah will never wear out or age. Those who enter Paradise will wear luxurious green silk. They will also wear jewelry made of diamonds, white pearls, gold, and rubies.

“They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their garments therein will be silk.” (Quran 22:23)

Companionship and Reunion with loved ones in Jannah

What about our loved ones? In Jannah, we will have it all and be happy. That’s why companionship is also highlighted as part of the joy, where loved ones will be reunited and accompanied by righteous souls.

This element of companionship, along with pure spouses and loved ones, contributes to a sense of complete, fulfilling joy and peace.

“Gardens of perpetual residence; they will enter them with whoever were righteous among their fathers, their spouses, and their descendants. And the angels will enter upon them from every gate, [saying], ‘Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured. And excellent is the final home.’” (Quran13: 23-24)

The Company of Prophets

Think about this: not only you will be with your loved ones and friends. But you will also be in the company of good people and prophets. Can you believe it? You will be able to see the prophet PBUH. What an honor and joy!

“And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger will be in the company of those blessed by Allah: the prophets, the people of truth, the martyrs, and the righteous—what honorable company!” (Quran 4:69).

No Sorrow or Bad Emotions

What’s more amazing about paradise in Islam is that despite it having many levels. If someone is at a lower level, they won’t feel it. They will not feel like anyone else is above them.

The thing is, Jannah isn’t just about the physical blessings, rivers, and trees. It’s about a sense of peace and contentment. Jannah will be free of sorrow, hate, boredom, jealousy, illness, fatigue, hurt, distress, and anxiety.

We won’t feel anger, sadness, envy, or any bad feeling when we are in Jannah, Inshaa’allah. All our hearts will be clean and pure.

“And we will have removed whatever is within their breasts of resentment, [while] flowing beneath them are rivers. And they will say, “Praise to Allah, who has guided us to this; and we would never have been guided if Allah had not guided us. Certainly, the messengers of our Lord had come with the truth.” And they will be called, “This is Paradise, which you have been made to inherit for what you used to do.”” (Quran 7:43).

“There they will never hear any idle or sinful talk—only good and virtuous speech.” (Quran 56:25–26).

“He who has settled us in the home of duration out of His bounty. There touches us not in it any fatigue, and there touches us not in it weariness [of mind].” (Quran 35: 35)

“We will remove whatever bitterness they had in their hearts. In a friendly manner, they will be on thrones, facing one another.” (Quran15:47)

So, now you may wonder, How do we get to paradise? Let’s find out!

How to Go to Heaven in Islam?

We all want to go to paradise, enjoy its blessings, and live happily ever after! So how can we make sure to be among the lucky and blessed of being in Jannah—a place of eternal bliss and happiness?

The journey starts with faith (iman)—believing in the Oneness of Allah and accepting His Messengers and his final Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). By upholding and performing the essential acts of worship to be Muslims, which include prayer (salah), Muslims fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

Charity (zakat) is another essential deed on this path. Besides following and obeying Allah’s command and the sunnah (teaching of the prophet), good deeds such as honesty, patience, and respect toward others are important as well.

“And whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer—those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged, [even as much as] the speck on a date seed.” (Quran 4:124)

One should also ask for forgiveness for their sins. No one is perfect, and we all make mistakes. However, Allah’s doors of forgiveness are always open, no matter the sin, as long as we truly and sincerely repent. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that:

“Every son of Adam sins, and the best of those who sin are those who repent” (Sunan Ibn Majah 4251).

“Race toward forgiveness from your Lord and a gardenearth whose width is like the width of the heavens and earth, prepared for those who believed in Allah and His messengers. That is the bounty of Allah which He gives to whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.” (Quran 57:21)

Final Words

In Islam, paradise (Jannah) is not only the ultimate reward but a symbol of Allah’s boundless mercy. We’ve explored the beauty of Jannah as described in the Quran, its inspiring characteristics, and the righteous path that leads to it.
