Australia’s Most Decorated Living Soldier Arrested Over Alleged War Crimes in Afghanistan
Australia’s most decorated living soldier, Ben Roberts-Smith, has been arrested over alleged war crimes committed during his deployment in Afghanistan. Authorities allege that he was involved in the killing of unarmed civilians, including detainees who posed no threat. Among the accusations are claims he kicked a handcuffed prisoner off a cliff before ordering his execution, and separately authorised the killing of a disabled man whose prosthetic leg was later taken and used as a trophy. Investigators further allege a pattern of unlawful killings, alongside efforts to intimidate fellow soldiers and silence potential witnesses.
Roberts-Smith now faces five counts of war crime murder, each carrying the possibility of life imprisonment. Once celebrated as a national hero, the case has cast a long shadow over his legacy and sparked a broader reckoning within Australia. It has reignited scrutiny over the conduct of Australian forces in Afghanistan, raising urgent questions about accountability, military culture, and the systems in place to address alleged abuses at the highest levels of command.
