The Friday Salah is an obligation upon every person who fulfills its conditions. And it is a Salah that consists of two rak’ahs. Omar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
The Friday prayer is two rak’ahs in its complete form, not in a shortened form. Such has the Prophet said” (Ahmad).
In this article, we will discover the meaning of Friday prayer, and more, let’s get started.
What Is Jummah Prayer?
Jummah prayer or Friday salah consists of a Congregational prayer where Men listen attentively to Jummah prayer, raising their hands when hearing the Takbir.
It is not a replacement for Dhuhr prayer or another version of the midday prayer. Rather it is a sixth obligatory salah like asr prayer that comes once a week.
When you pray Jummah prayer, the obligation to pray Dhuhr prayer drops. So, if one were unable to pray Jumu’ah salah, then he must offer Zuhr prayer.
Friday Salah in Quran and Sunnah
The Quran establishes the obligation of Friday prayer, along with the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, and the consensus of Muslims.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), said:
“I had a desire, which I did not intend to fulfill, to tell a man to lead the people in prayer, and then burn the houses of the men who do not come to Jumu’ah” (Muslim).
Conditions for the Validity of the Friday Salah (Congregational Prayer)
The validity of Friday salah is the same as the validity of regular salahs with some slight additions. First, the salah in its entirety must be completed in its time, whereas in other salahs, only one rak’ah needs to be completed in its time.
Also, most scholars agree that for Jumu’ah prayer to be valid, it must take place in a settled area. A valid Jumu’ah cannot take place among the nomads. Moreover, according to the majority of scholars, this area must be a town with at least forty residents, not just an area with a few dwellings.
The Hanafis disagree and believe Friday prayer cannot take place in small towns or villages, but in a large city. However, this opinion is uncommon in the Muslim world. They also believe that Jumu’ah salah can take place anywhere, even if it is out in the open.
As for the number of people in attendance that make Friday prayer valid, most scholars say it should be at least forty. The Malikis say it should be at least thirteen. The Malikis hold the opinion that the one who gives the khutbah should lead the Jumu’ah salah. While other scholars believe that one person can give the khutbah and another can lead the salah.
The Time of Friday Prayer and Sermons
Jummah prayer According to the Hanafis and Shafi’is, the time of Jumu’ah is the same as that of dhuhr. Which is from when the sun passes the zenith up until the shadow of objects is equal to its own length.
As for the Hanbalis, the time for Jumaah Salah begins around twenty minutes after sunrise and ends when the shade of objects becomes its own length.
However, they deem it preferable for people to pray at the time of dhuhr and not before. Malikis are of the opinion that the time of Jumu’ah begins after the sun passes its zenith and ends with sunset.
When Is It an Obligation for One to Hasten to Jumu’ah Salah?
The Safi’is, Malikis, and Hanbalis agree that to abandon business transactions and head to the masjid is obligatory when a person hears the second Friday prayer call to prayer if the masjid he plans to attend the Friday first call to prayer has two adhaans.
However, the Hanafis say that business transactions become forbidden after the first adhaan of Jummah prayer. These rulings apply only to those upon whom it is compulsory to attend the Friday jummah prayer together.
Upon Whom Is Friday Salah An Obligation?
As for the conditions that must be fulfilled for Friday Salah to become an obligation upon a person, they Include:
- The first of the extra conditions is that one be a male.
- Second, is that one be free from bondage.
- Third, that one is healthy enough so that going to the masjid does not hurt him.
- Fourth, that one lives in an area where there is Friday prayer performed.
So, whoever is distant from a Jumu’ah prayer, is not obligated to pray Jumu’ah. The distance that is considered far away is three miles; also Jumu’ah is not an obligation on one who is traveling.
If a person is afraid to leave their house or afraid that if they leave, their families or wealth may be harmed then it is permissible for him to not attend the Jumu’ah salah. Also during times of severe weather people are exempt from having to attend the Jumu’ah salah.
The Attendance of Women at Jumu’ah Salah
As for the attendance of women at the Friday salah, the four scholars agree that if a woman is elderly such that she is not the object of desire, it is mubaah (neutral) for her to attend the Jumu’ah salah. Meaning it is not encouraged or discouraged.
If she is not elderly, it is encouraged for her to pray in her home, and if she is young and beautiful and there is a fear that her attendance of the Friday prayer will attract the sight of men, then it is discouraged for her to attend.
According to the Hanafis and Malikis, it is makrooh (disliked). According to the Hanbalis and Shafi’is it is haraam (forbidden).
Multiple Jumu’ahs In One Place

The goal of Friday Salah is that: people gather in one place, reverently fearing their Lord, to seek forgiveness, the bonds of harmony will be tightened between them, the feelings of mercy and gentleness will be revived among them, cause hatred and envy would die among them. and thus,
The wealthy the poor, and the elderly have mercy on the younger, and the younger respect the elders and honor them, that they all feel like they are servants of Allah alone.
There is no doubt that having multiple Jumu’ahs in one place contradicts these wisdoms. For this reason, it is best for people to gather in one masjid for Jumu’ah and it is not permissible to have multiple Jumu’ahs unless there is a necessity such as the size of the masjid.
The Jumu’ah of Minorities
Many of the Jumu’ahs in the US began in houses being performed by a few people. There is leniency in Islam for this kind of gamaa prayer of situation. Performing Friday prayer in a place where there are few Muslims is different than performing it in the Muslim majority country.
There are benefits for Muslims in places where Muslims are scarce in that there is some allowance in terms of performing Friday prayer when the numbers are few and there is no masjid nearby.
These benefits include keeping the few Muslims in the area in touch with one another and keeping them close to their Imam or where the imam sits.
Also, if Jumu’ahs begin in this way there is a high probability that a masjid will be built and the number of Muslims in the community of the area will increase and strengthen.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Friday Salah holds immense spiritual and communal significance in Islam, offering an opportunity for worship, reflection, and unity.
By understanding its importance and learning how to perform it properly, Muslims can fully embrace the blessings and rewards of this special weekly prayer.
