On this day, 25 years ago, the Srebrenica Genocide took place.
On 11th July, 1995, the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS), under the command of General Ratko Mladić, as well as various Serb paramilitary groups, took control of the town of Srebrenica in eastern Bosnia and conducted one of the worst instances of systematic mass murder of civilians in Europe since the Holocaust of the Second World War. It became known as the Srebrenica Genocide, and so far 8,373 victims have been identified from the hundreds of mass graves that have been uncovered to date.
